Covering adult dependants
We understand that these days, kids are staying at home longer. It could be while they’re studying, while saving for a major purchase like their own house, or even just while they find their feet.
Private health insurance often gets overlooked by young adults as they transition into things like paying their own expenses, so we have some options available to help keep your adult children covered.
Up until the age of 25, full time students and apprentices earning less than $30,000 p.a. are automatically included in your family policy at no extra charge, providing they are not married or in a de facto relationship. We recognise that their earning potential is limited during this time, so your premium stays the same.
But if your adult children are working, and aren’t full time students or apprentices, don’t worry – we still offer a cover option called Extended Family/Extended Single Parent cover. Extended Family cover allows you to keep your adult children on the same policy (as long as they’re not married or in a de facto relationship) from the age of 21 until they’re 25. The Extended Family/Extended Single Parent cover policy premium will of course be higher than our standard family or single parent family policy, but will prove to be a financially more economical option for eligible dependant children, in comparison to having them take out their own cover at an equivalent level.
The Extended Family cover option will be restricted to Private Hospital and Premium Extras or Essential Extras packaged covers only. It will not be available to family or single parent policies with any Hospital Only Product, Private Hospital and Young Extras Product, Singles and Combine cover Products or Public Hospital and Extras packaged covers.
